Mitochondria are the power plants of our cells

Do you remember when you heard the term “mitochondria” for the first time? For most of us, it was during the biology classes. They taught us that these organelles are the tiny power plants in our cells. So, next time you feel energetic or exhausted, blame it on this organelle. Every human owes her/his life energy to a woman because we inherit mitochondrial DNA only from our mothers. So that the energy of life passes from one mother to the next. Let’s get to know mitochondria better.

Mitochondrial DNA

The more energy a cell consumes; the more mitochondria it has. For instance, mitochondria make almost half of the heart muscle cells. This amount drops to 25 % in skeletal muscle cells and brain cells. Liver and kidney cells also have plenty of mitochondria because they are hard-working cells. The number of mitochondria is deficient in lazy cells that do not need much energy. For example, fat cells can survive with almost one or two mitochondria.

The more and healthy mitochondria you have, the more energy you will generate. The energy you produce will be of high quality.

What happens when your mitochondrial function decreases? The reason for most of the widespread health problems in recent years is that our mitochondria become lazy and unable to work. In particular, excessive food consumption is a condition that increases the workload of mitochondria. Especially junk food quickly blocks our system and disrupt the functions of the mitochondria.

If your diet includes low-quality carbohydrates, such as sugar, flour or starch-loaded foods, heavy metals, chemical toxins, food colors, your mitochondria will soon deteriorate. Under this oxidative/corrosive stress, the mitochondrial function reduces. In this case, the mitochondria will have difficulty in removing toxins and also have problems burning fat. The unburned fat will be added to the circulation as triglycerides and will accumulate in the liver and around the waistline.

On the other hand, the concentration of triglycerides in the membrane of it will also make the mitochondria even lazier. In a sense, this means the development of insulin insensitivity, that is, insulin resistance.

Can you guess the inevitable result? Yes, unfortunately, the result is fat gain. Don’t forget that the reduction and laziness of mitochondria also cause chronic fatigue.

The number of mitochondria decreases with age

On the other hand, the number of mitochondria decreases as we get older. The main reason is muscle loss due to aging.

There are two easy and effective ways to deal with this situation:

1- Moving more and encouraging the production of new mitochondria 

2- Reducing the workload of mitochondria by eating less.

That’s why physicians persistently repeat this sentence “As we age, we need to eat less and move more.”

As a result, if you do not want to be tired of old age, do not allow your muscles to weaken. If you don’t want your muscles to weaken, act on it. Taking regular walks would be a good start. Health food such as olive oil and honey helps to increase your mitochondrial health.

Mitochondria are one of the most complex and interesting organelles in the cell. It has its own DNA, unique personality, unique proteins, mechanism and principle of operation. They produce energy and protect the cell from threats. Moreover, they reproduce, circulate in the cell go where energy is needed. Just like our mothers.

Each mitochondrion continues to work as if it were our mother inside the cell until we die. There is another interesting fact: Each person inherits mitochondrial DNA only from their mothers. So the energy of life passes from mother to mother. That is to say, every human owes her/his life energy to a woman.
